Vases

When my family sits down to dinner, we almost always have fresh flowers or greenery in a vase on the table. There’s something lovely about inviting the beauty of the outdoors to take a seat with us at our meal.

I make vases of varying sizes and shapes in both light and dark clay bodies, typically with sgraffito carvings of poppies or dahlias (and an occasional honeybee). On the dark clay, I apply a slip that includes a speckled white and my regular white clay and then carve away. On the light clay, I apply a terracotta colored underglaze which gets carved. I love a bright blue glaze that somehow seems to complement every bouquet I’ve ever arranged!
